I am a huge fan of vampire stories. My love for them started with Anne Rice’s ‘Vampire Chronicles’ more than a decade ago, and they are still my favourite. It is through her that I crossed paths online with Carmen Dominique Taxer. I first read her in-depth blog posts about vampires and literature, and then I moved on to her own stories and books. And I have to say, I wasn’t disappointed at all.“Blood Pearl” is the start of a series that revolves around characters that are hard to pin down and put into words. And to me, therein lies their fascination. Just when thought I had figured them out, they surprised me again. And I love it when a book keeps me constantly on my toes without being too complicated or obscure to follow. The plot has many threads that are woven together, not always without knots and not always for the naked eye to see, and that has me sufficiently intrigued to move on to the sequels such as “Blood Deluge”, Book 2 of ‘Shades of the Sea and Flame’ (which has a beautiful title with a hidden meaning).
While this is a novella and not a full-length novel, it captivated me and made me think long after putting the book down. There are some typical vampire elements in the story, but mixed with something that seems like the author’s own lore and magic. I am curious to know more about it. Ida strikes me as strong yet vulnerable, and the Gens is utterly fascinating, in the past as in the present.
If you are looking for a refreshing, somewhat daring and nicely intellectual change from the usual vampire novels, then I can highly recommend “Blood Pearl”.

Blood Pearl A Sanguinem Emere Novel Shades of the Sea and Flame Book 1 edition by Carmen Dominique Taxer Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews
I have always been a fan of books that contain mythical creatures such as vampires. Blanchfleur, the protagonist, is every woman that has ever lived throughout history. She is relatable as she lives in a world where expectations are imposed on her, simply because she is a woman. This book takes us on a journey where Blanchefleur is torn between traditional duty and her own desires. The author writes the book with such passion and eloquence, leaving you wanting more. We see how the Blanchfleur grows and develops which each choice that she needs to make for herself. I found this book thoroughly enjoyable and was unable to put it down. The supernatural world which Daxer describes is vividly emblazoned in my mind. The author writes from such an and honest place. I look forward to more books featuring the protagonist.
MY Gods, it is the best Vampire Novella of 2017 THUS Far that I have read. <3 Thank you Carmen for bringing back the BEST Part of Vampires, the real Passion and love of vampires.
I absolutely loved this novella and highly recommend it to readers who are intrigued with the vampire genre. I’m fairly well read in this area and found the book to be slightly different from the expected.
The story begins in September, 1647, when we meet the vampire, Raphael De Sangallo, and his vampire servant/compatriot, Gerard Bastian Douveaux. Raphael has been the focus of an attack and is severely burned and both men are struggling to get to a safer place. The story follows Raphael’s path from September 22,1647, to the winter of 1747. Ida Blanchefleur enters the story on August 3,1747, when she begins her unfortunate forced marriage to Dmitri Kron, a man who initially seems to be kind, but who we later learn has more than a bit of an anger management problem.
Ida meets Raphael the night of her arrival at her new home, Strigosia, and we follow her relationship with the vampire and her new husband, Dmitri, until August 13, 1747.
Ms. Taxer’s descriptions are consistently excellent and she’s masterful at creating a mysterious and romantic atmosphere. I could easily visualize the scenes she created. There’s also sufficient detail to meet the needs of a detail-oriented reader, but not so much that the focus of the story becomes blurred.
I need to see good character development to really enjoy a book and Ms. Taxer provides that. There are enough characters to flesh out every aspect of the story, but not so many that the reader loses track of their contribution to the book.
This book has several unexpected twists and I can’t say enough good things about Ms. Taxer’s ability to write a good story in a succinct and extremely entertaining manner.
Blood Pearl drew me in from the get go. I really enjoyed the nostalgic tones and uncompromising plotline. Can't wait for the next installment. D
too short, liked the story but too many gaps. information of character wasnt enough to fully understand who they really were. i still give story a 4 star because it interested me.
This book reminded me of Tanithe Lee's Paradys series. A girl in love with Darkness, a husband with dark secrets. The tower itself and the graveyard with the mausoleum of secrets.
Definitely going to read more in the series.
Since vampires are my main squeeze, I’m always excited when I come across a book that doesn’t de-fang them—like so many sadly do these days! This book combines the essential elements that make vampires the alluring creatures they are lust, power, and blood. Taxer doesn’t give too much away about her vampire mythology, but we’re given glimpses that leave us wanting to know more. I also feel her characters developed nicely as I read. I am definitely curious to see Raphael’s origin and see how Ida and her family play a role in his life.
