Raven, by all accounts from many sources, is THE base setting textbook for botany. However this latest edition, which passes the $250.00 mark at the school books store, and still $140.00 here on , was published without the latest updates that prompted the new edition! Chapters 31 and 32 must be sought out, as PDF files, either from your professor, or the publisher itself. Why require the latest edition of a textbook when that edition does not include the latest updates at publication? Just another show of how publishers of textbooks rip off students and professors alike!
This is a required text for my botany class. Wish there were more labeled pictures. And some information is out of date. I would read this in conjunction with other text to get a complete understanding of some subjects.
Love this book. This book make Botany much easier to understand. Very useful pictures and descriptions. Used this book as a companion book to my Botany class and got a A. Highly recommend this book for anyone taking Botany or just wanting to understand the subject it better.
This book. This book is great. The writing is so poetic (or perhaps this may just me) and easy to understand, it really transmitted a passion for botany that left you with a greater appreciation of these organisms. And the loose-leaf choice is awesome because you just buy a _big_ binder, which saves you a lot of money. It also gives you the option of bringing just the chapters under discussion to class.
Biology books are expensive, and this loose leaf is a lot cheaper than even a used copy from my school's bookstore. This was purchased for a class that I will be taking in the fall. I put it in a 1" 5 star Hybrid flexbinder, and while it fits, if you want extra room then I would encourage a 1.5". The flexbinder is nice because it makes the textbook into a lot more study-friendly. The book itself has normal thin, glossy papers and I'm going to make sure that I have some hole reinforcers because I have a feeling that I will need them. All together, I am happy about this purchase.
